I’m having a hard time finding the link, but last night I went to YouTube and searched for “Ataturk.” I was pleased to find a very short video (VERY short, unfortunately, only six seconds) of him giving a speech. I don’t speak Turkish, so I have no idea what he was saying, but it was a thrill even so.
Like most Americans, I knew very little about Ataturk for most of my life. Several years ago, I became curious and began to read as much as I could find. Once one learns of his accomplishments, it becomes clear that he was one of the great leaders of the twentieth century- the peer of Churchill and Roosevelt.
I have read that Ataturk said, “Happy is the man who can call himself a Turk.” I would add, “Fortunate is the nation that is given a man like Ataturk.”
